Ella Joyce Buckley is a South African born Composer, Performer and Sound Artist. She lives and works between New York City and South Africa. Buckley has been performing on the NYC Art Gallery circuit since 2008 and works as a freelance composer in Brooklyn.

“Buckley’s convictions are deeply personal, intimate and adamantly non-didactic in her approach, choosing to speak to the heart directly rather than to the rationalized mind. Her music is informed by the nature of the soul. “

“Detached from both time and space Blood Finds No Sea sounds like it was recorded in a monastery, in the seventies, in anticipation of the ethereal neo-chamber music tones of 4AD favorites Dead Can Dance and This Mortal Coil. It’s the detachment from the now that seduces on expatriate songstress Ella Joyce Buckley’s third and most conceptually complete release to date. Layers and layers of operatic and chanting vocals swell dramatically over scrunching and warping samples, distant and positively medieval guitars. It’s an evocative sonic architecture whose rhythms are provided mostly by mounting synths and gothic references. It’s almost as though Buckley and producer Dirk Hugo have crafted the soundtrack to a pagan terror love story, a silent cinema shot somewhere in Eastern Europe in 1910. Note by note, sample by sample, layer by layer, florid phrase by florid phrase, it builds all too elegantly into ecstatic exhaustion, and yet I have a feeling it’s not finished with me yet.” – ROLLING STONE

…despite the tunefulness and peacefulness there’s an edge that sets [Buckley] apart…” - kagablog
